The 80's

One big thing that happened

On the 9th of November 1989 the Berlin Wall fell. It was a wall that divided Berlin into two separated parts; East Berlin and West Berlin.

It was the the Germans from the West that started to think that the wall was irrelevant. As you can see in the videos below, there were very many people there who protested against the wall's existence. They then started to wreck the wall as a protest. Then the East's government said that they were going to make at least a dozen more openings in the wall, since the West's had started to wreck it (second video).

Before the wall fell, it was a dangerous place. There was two thin walls, and the space between them (the pictures below) was called the Death strip. Hundreds of people who tried to escape to the other side was shot there. As you also can see on the picture, there's people walking in the Death strip. They were cleaners, who picked up trash that people threw over the wall. The wall on the West side was also filled with graffiti.

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was born at the 9th of August 1963 in New Jersey, USA. She was an amazing singer, and she was also an actress and producer. Two of her most famous songs are "I will always love you", and "I wanna dance with somebody". She has also acted in, for example, "The Bodyguard" in 1992, along with Kevin Costner.

In 2012, she died in her hotel room in Beverly Hills, California, only 48 years old. She was found dead just a few hours before an annual party which is hold before the Grammy Awards. Later, they found out that she drowned in her bathtub after an overdose of cocaine.
She had problems with drugs since 1992 when she starred in Bodyguard, but several times she said that she had dealed with them (but that doesn't have to be true).

The world was really sad when one of the biggest stars in the industry was gone. In the 80's, she was discovered by Clive Davis (boss for Artista Records), when she was singing at night clubs. Her debut album Whitney Houston came out in 1985. It was a success, and it was sold in over 25 million copies. Her second album, Whitney, made her famous all over the world.

Whitney made 6 albums, 4 compilation albums, and one christmas album. She also was in 5 movies, and one TV-series.

Translation of Whitney's song "I wanna dance with somebody"

Huh, yeah, woo, hey yeah, huh                                  Huh, yeah, woo, hey yeah, huh

Ooh yeah, uh huh, yeah                                             Ooh yeah, uh huh, yeah

I want to dance                                                           Jag vill dansa

Clock strikes upon the hour                                       Klockan slår till timmen

And the sun begins to fade                                        Och solen börjar gå ner

Still enough time to figure out                                  Fortfarande tillräckligt med tid för att komma på

How to chase my blues away                                   Hur jag ska jaga iväg min deppighet

I've done alright up 'til now                                      Jag har gjort det okej fram tills nu

It's the light of day that shows me how                    Det är ljuset i dagen som visar mig hur

And when the night falls                                          Och vid skymningen

Loneliness calls                                                        Kallar ensamhet

[Chorus 2x:]                                                            [Refräng 2x:]

Oh! I wanna dance with somebody                         Åh! Jag vill dansa med någon

I wanna feel the heat with somebody                      Jag vill känna hettan med någon

Yeah! I wanna dance with somebody                     Ja! Jag vill dansa med någon

With somebody who loves me                                Med någon som älskar mig

I've been in love and lost my senses                       Jag har varit kär och tappat kontrollen

Spinning through the town                                     Snurrat runt i staden

Sooner or later the fever ends                                Förr eller senare försvinner febern

And I wind up feeling down                                  Och jag slutar med att känna mig nere

I need a man who'll take a chance                         Jag behöver en man som ska ta en chans

On a love that burns hot enough to last        På en kärlek som bränner tillräckligt varmt för att stanna

So when the night falls                                          Så vid skymningen

My lonely heart calls                                             Kallar mitt ensamma hjärta

[Chorus 2x:]                                                          [Refräng 2x:]

Oh! I wanna dance with somebody                       Åh! Jag vill dansa med någon
I wanna feel the heat with somebody                    Jag vill känna hettan med någon
Yeah! I wanna dance with somebody                   Ja! Jag vill dansa med någon

With somebody who loves me                              Med någon som älskar mig

Somebody who, somebody who...                       Någon som, någon som...
somebody who loves me,                                    Någon som älskar mig,

Somebody who, somebody who...                      Någon som, någon som...
to hold me in his arms.                                        Att hålla mig i hans famn

I need a man who'll take a chance,                     Jag behöver en man som ska ta en chans

On a love that burns hot enough to last.

So when the night falls,                                     Så vid skymningen,

My lonely heart calls.                                        Kallar mitt ensamma hjärta.

[Chorus 2x:]                                                      [Refräng 2x:]

Oh! I wanna dance with somebody                   Åh! Jag vill dansa med någon
I wanna feel the heat with somebody                Jag vill känna hettan med någon
Yeah! I wanna dance with somebody               Ja! Jag vill dansa med någon

With somebody who loves me                          Med någon som älskar mig

Uh-Huh                                                              Uh-huh

(Dance)                                                              (Dansa)

C'mon, baby                                                       Kom igen, älskling

(Dance)                                                              (Dansa)

Woo, yeah                                                          Woo, yeah

(Dance)                                                              (Dansa)

Now get with this, hahaha

Whoa, oh, oh                                                      Whoa, oh, oh

Don't you wanna dance (dance)                        Vill du inte dansa (dansa)
With me baby?                                                  Med mig älskling?

Don't you wanna dance (dance)                        Vill du inte dansa (dansa)
With me boy?                                                    Med mig kille?

Don't you wanna dance (dance)                        Vill du inte dansa (dansa)
With me baby?                                                  Med mig älskling?

With somebody who loves me                         Med någon som älskar mig

Don't you wanna dance?                                   Vill du inte dansa?

Say you wanna dance?                                      Säger du att du vill dansa?

Don't you wanna dance?                                   Vill du inte dansa?

(Dance)                                                              (Dansa)

Don't you wanna dance?                                   Vill du inte dansa?

Say you wanna dance?                                      Säger du att du vill dansa?

Don't you wanna dance?                                   Vill du inte dansa?

(Dance)                                                              (Dansa)
Don't you wanna dance?                                   Vill du inte dansa?
Say you wanna dance... (Dance)                       Säger du att du vill dansa... (Dansa)
Uh-huh                                                               Uh-huh
With somebody who loves me                           Med någon som älskar mig.

Fireproof - översättning

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/onedirection/fireproof.html

Anne Frank

Anne Frank
Anne's life
Anne Frank was a jewish girl born on the 12th of June in 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany. Her real name was Annelies, but she was called Anne.

The Frank family; Margot, Otto, Anne, Edith
Anne moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, with her family in 1933. She had a mother and a father called Edith and Otto. She also had a 3 year older sister called Margot. The reason why they moved from Germany was because Adolf Hitler became the new leader of Germany. Since Anne and her family were jews, they didn't agree to Hitler's thoughts about them and their religion.

By the time Hitler got the power in Germany (in 1933), the economics was very poor. You can say that the country was depressed, but in an economic way.
This made Anne's parents very worried, and that's also a reason to why they wanted to move away from Germany.

When the family had moved from Germany to the Netherlands they lived in peace and they were safe. Anne and Margot went to school, and the parents worked and took care of the house.
But then, in 1940, Hitler and Germany invaded the Netherlands. Now the Frank family weren't safe anymore.

Hitler made strict rules for the jews. The jews couldn't go outside some parts of the city, they had to live in bad neighborhoods, and they had to buy food and other supplies in certain stores. They also had to wear a symbol of the jewish sign: a "star of David". It became more and more extreme, and Hitler eventually sent the jews to concentration camps.

The star of David
A while before Hitler started the concentration camps, Margot was called to go to a labour camp. Edith and Otto thought this was too much, so they decided to hide from the world, and from Hitler.

Anne and her family hid in the building where her father worked. It wasn't only her family who hid in the small space, it was also the van Pels family. Their names were Hermann and Auguste, and together they had a son called Peter. Fritz Pfeffer also hid along with them.

The bookshelf they used as a door to their hiding place.
Four of Otto's employees helped them to get food and such things. The eight of them were always scared of being discovered in their little place, and they had to be really quiet all the time.
For two years (1942-1944) they all lived in this little place until they got betrayed, but no one knows by whom.

On the 4th of August 1944 the eight people was discovered and sent to different concentration camps. Anne got to be along with both her mother and sister at the concentration camp in Auschwitz. Margot and Anne then got moved to the camp in Bergen-Belsen, where they both died. They both died of typhus in March 1945 (Anne was only 15 years old), only about a month before the Brits liberated the camp.

Both a young and an old Otto Frank.
Everyone else, except Otto, died too. Hermann got gassed to death at the concentration camp in Auschwitz. The other died at different camps. Most of them was first at the Auschwitz-camp, but then got moved to other camps and died there instead.

Otto got free from the concentration camp in Auschwitz when russian troops liberated the camp. He moved around in Europe, and he also married Elfreide Geiringer, who also was a survivor of the camp in Auschwitz. Otto died year 1980, 91 years old.

One of the helpers, Miep Giers, was the last survivor of the people we associate with Anne Frank. She died on the 11th of January 2010, and she then was 100 years old.

Anne's diary
Anne's diary
While Anne and the 7 other people hid, she got a diary. Or, she got it for her 13th birthday a while before they hid. She wrote down all of her thoughts; about life, about love, about everything.
I've read the book myself, and you really get into her life. If you don't know how the people look or sound like you make it up yourself. Sometimes I forgot it was a real life story and not a made-up story.

When Otto Frank got liberated from the Auschwitz camp he went back to Amsterdam to talk to Miep and Jan Gies (the helpers). He discovered that both Edith, Margot and Anne didn't survive the war, even if his hopes was that they did.
Otto got Anne's diary from Miep and Jan in 1945. He also made Anne's wish about publishing her diary after the war, come true.

The diary of Anne Frank was published in 1947. Otto answered many letters from people who read the book, and it also touched many people. The book got translated into other languages, and it also became a theater and a movie.

The diary has been published in over 50 languages. It's now also made into many different movies, and it's a story famous all over the world.

Concentration camps
The first concentration camp was in Germany in 1933. Hitler sent jews, communists, handicapped people, homosexuals, people with political thoughts that weren't like Hitler's and so on, to the camps- His goal was to make them weak both physically and mentally. Some of the camps were extermination camps, and that's where Hitler made the jews get into shower rooms where they got gassed to death. It was first in 1939 that there were many camps in different parts of Germany. Later, there were camps in for example Poland, too.

He used these camps during the World War II, and over 5 millions of jews died during the extermination. Also, many millions of people from the other groups of people died in the camps.

People in the clothes they got from the concentration camp.
Auschwitz was a concentration camp in Poland (where Anne died), and it's the most famous camp. In the years 1942-1944 about 2 millions of jews got gassed to death.

When the people came to Auschwitz they got divided in groups. First, it was two groups; men and women. Then they split those groups up into who could work and who was too weak to work. The ones who was too weak to work (like sick people, old people, kids etc.) got sent to the gas chambers. The ones who could work got to work during very bad conditions.

In the gas chambers, there could be around 700 people at the same time. When they had died, they got buried in mass graves for jews.
In the Auschwitz camp, there was a wall that they called the "extermination wall". There, a person has to stand all naked facing the wall, and then they got shot in the head.

In the concentration camps, the prisoners couldn't wear their own clothes. The soldiers took the clothes away from them, and instead they got to wear a striped uniform that looked like a pyjamas. The men got to wear trousers, vest, hat and a coat. Women got to wear a dress. The prisoners weren't allowed to wear socks, so they only wore shoes that made them get sores on their feet. The sores could be infected because the conditions on the camps were very poor, and the infections could lead to the dead.
The prisoners got to change their clothes every six weeks. On their clothing there were a number that showed what number the prisoner had, and there were also a triangle that showed what "group of people" the prisoner belonged to. For example, jews had a yellow triangle, homosexuals a pink one and criminals had a green one.

The idea of being at a concentration camp myself make me feel really sad. I don't understand how people could work at the camps and support Hitler. They killed so many innocent people, and I just don't understand. It's crazy, that all of this actually happened.

English: What am I doing during the lessons?

LESSON 1

What have I done?
Everyone had to decide what to work with as individuals for a few weeks ahead. My decision was a little hard, but I decided to write a text about Anne Frank and her diary. She lived in the 18th century, and that's also what we're working with outside the english lessons.
Today I have read facts about Anne as a start to my writing, because I didn't had so much time left of the lesson.

What am I going to do until the next lesson?
I will start to write about Anne Frank.

LESSON 2

What am I going to do?
I will write about Anne Frank, and come very far on the text. Right now I've only written a little bit.

What have I done?
Today I've written very much. The text is now on it's way to become a big work about Anne, her diary, concentration camps, and also a little bit about Hitler.

LESSON 3

What am I going to do?
Like the last time, I'll write about Anne Frank.

What have I done?
I have written very much about Anne, and the long text about her life and concentration camps is now finished. I've started to write about her diary, and the history about it; how she started to write it, when it got published and so on.

What am I going to do until the next lesson?
I will finish writing about her diary, and the history about it.

LESSON 5

What am I going to do?
I'm going to write about Anne Frank's diary, and if I get bored of it I will read her diary.

What have I done?
I've read a few pages in the book, and I've also written about her diary. Now I'm finished with that.

What am I going to do until the next lesson?
I will figure out a new area to write about that's associated to Anne Frank, and then start to write a little bit.

Sweden's new government

Sweden now has gotten a whole new government. The Social Democrats got the most votes in the choice of the population of Sweden. Here's the new ministers.

The new prime minister of Sweden is Stefan Löfven. He's a social democrat, and he's 57 years old. Two of the things he wants to do is to reduce the unemployment and improve the school results. A random fact about him is that he was raised by foster parents.

The name of our new finance minister is Magdalena Andersson, 47 years old. She's also a social democrat, and, she has worked with economy for a long time. She has to do a really good job with this, because Sweden's last finance minister, Anders Borg, did a great job with Sweden's crisis.

Our new foreign minister is called Margot Wallström, and she's a social democrat too. She's 60 years old, and she also has big shoes too fill (as Magdalena Andersson). The foreign minister we had before her was Carl Bildt, and he did a really good job with it. Margot is from Skellefteå, in the north of Sweden, and she never went to university.

Our deputy prime minister is called Åsa Romson.

Transportation

The best way to transport is, in my opinion, by green cars. As you can tell by the name they're good for the environment. Some of them runs by electricity, and it's very good.
Trains are a good choice too, I think. They are not really good for the environment, but it's a fast way to transport, and it's public transport which is good. It's not only for one or two people, but for many, and that's better for the environment. I count in subways and things like that, because they're almost the same things.

I think the worst way to transport is by ordinary cars, because they release so much carbon dioxide. The gas destroys the environment, and that's not good at all.

"Faller" by Norlie & KKV

ÖVERSÄTTNING
(Swedish -> English)

My frustration has taken over me
In the night it keeps me awake
I have my ambition, but no room for it
Now I know why I'm getting crazy

I don't want anything to control how I feel
So I can start to care when my heart stops to beat

It feels like I am falling down
Every little piece that I have left
Now I shut my eyes for all I see
And therefore I wanna dance, yeah therefore I wanna dance

Through all the problems that I have
With shut eyes I can see clear
'Cause it feels like everything's falling down
And therefore I wanna dance, yeah I'm going to dance

Ah, I wanted to dream better
But everything got worse with sleeping pills
Damned nights, unquiet days
It's forgotten by the way

'Cause I made my way back to reality
When I woke up I ripped apart the problems
And now I walk where the road takes me
But now I keep the dignity

I don't want anything to control how I feel
So I can start to care when my heart stops to beat

It feels like I am falling down
Every little piece that I have left
Now I shut my eyes for all I see
And therefore I wanna dance, yeah, therefore I wanna dance

Through all the problems that I have
With shut eyes I can see clear
'Cause it feels like everything's falling down
And therefore I wanna dance, yeah, therefore I will dance

Standing here with closed eyes
Shut my eyes for all I see
Tonight we're gonna dance
While we are falling down

x2
It feels like I am falling down
Every little piece that I have left
Now I shut my eyes for all I see
And therefore I wanna dance, yeah, therefore I wanna dance

Through all the problems that I have
With shut eyes I can see clear

And therefore I wanna dance, yeah, therefore I will dance

"Snälla bli min" by Veronica Maggio

ÖVERSÄTTNING
(svenska -> engelska)

I can't talk to you when you look away
Please give me two seconds before you give up
Can't we be close just for one minute
Is it now, now when it runs out?
Even if you don't listen I know that you hear anyway
I want to catch on and say everything before I go
Baby, wait can I just sit beside you
It was him who wanted to kiss me

Please be mine again
No, let it be like a movie
Please be mine again
Let me be left here
No, let it be

You push my arm away from you arm
And you move away
Nothing that I say does matter anymore
Taking place in the hallway until I understand what have happened
Can I even have you as my friend?
I tie my shoes and walk back in again
Sitting here on the bed until you beg me to go home
Searching for something to say that can change everything
Something more than what I've already said

Please be mine again
No, let it be like a movie
Please be mine again
Let me be left here
No, let it be

SAMMANFATTNING

This song is about a girl who tries to get her boyfriend back. I think she has been cheating, or at least been kissing another guy. She tries to tell him that she didn't wanted to kiss the other guy, and that she wants to get him back to her. The problem is that he doesn't want her back.
It's a very beautiful song, in my opinion.

"Crying for no reason" by Katy B

The song is about a girl who is crying for no reason.
Well, I think it is a reason behind it. Things that have made her sad have happened to her, but she has just pushed them away and tried to ignore them. But now the thoughts have come back to her, and everything has gotten too much for her.
She thinks it's her fault and that she has done many things that's not so good. Now she sees the consequences of what she has done.

"Happily" by One Direction

This song is about a boy who is in love with a girl. Unfortunately something, fate, made it so the two of them had to separate. When he sees this girl holding another guy's hand, something happens with him. I guess he's sad/angry/irritated.
This boy knows that the girl is with another guy. The boy has been with her too, and he doesn't care if the guy finds out that he's not the only one who has been with her.
Since the two of them can't be together, he knows that the girl wants to leave. He doesn't care what people think, but I guess she does, and that's why she wants to leave. In the lyrics he says that he wants to be with her forever, and that it could be so if they left.

About reading english books

It's good to read english books. Your skills gets better and it makes you better in many ways.
For example, your vocabulary gets wider. You learn more words that you can use while you read, talk or write. You read faster, and it's easier to understand the texts. Because of the sentences in the books your talk- and writing skills gets better too. When you read sentences you can learn to write a little like the authors.

I like to read books in english, and I will continue to do that. I know it's good, and therefore I like to do it. It's fun too.

Stalker - Helen Orme

This book is called "Stalker" and the writer's name is Helen Orme.

The story is about five girls called Siti, Kelly, Rachel, Donna and Lu, and these girls are best friends. No, actually they're more than best friends. They're more like five sisters.
The girls are going to go to a Halloween party near the school this friday evening. Siti and Lu get to Kelly's house to pick her up while Rachel and Donna are at the party, waiting for the three girls.

When the five girls are together at the party they see three boys they know. They're called Gary, Simon and Billy.
The girls hang with the boys for a while, until they're going to ride the Ghost Train. Then Siti and Rachel go and buy some toffee apples.
When they've bought one apple each someone runs to the girls and stoles Siti's apple! Luckly it wasn't a thief, just Siti's brother Daudi. Siti gets mad at him and she's shouting at him. He doesn't care, though, and he's just running away from the girls.

Later this night, Kelly, Rachel and Siti are together. Siti and Rachel wants to ride a roller coaster, but not Kelly. She sees Gary and his friends standing by the bumper cars. Kelly says she can wait there with the boys, but when she get there Gary isn't there! Instead Daudi and his friends are there. They throw an egg in Kelly's hair, and Kelly gets sad. She thinks the evening has been a disaster and she wants to go home.

When Kelly is on her way home she can hear footsteps behind her. Kelly gets a bit scared, and she stops sometimes just to check that no one is behind her. When she hurries the footsteps hurries, and when she slows down the footsteps slow down too.
When she get home she goes upstairs. Then she hear her brother talk to their mum, and he's telling her that he was after Kelly all the time.

OLIVER TWIST
The movie we’ve seen is about a young boy called Oliver Twist, who doesn’t have any parents. Oliver lives in the tough 1800s United Kingdom. He was born in a small town called Portsea in southern England. His mother died at Olivers birth, and no one knows anything about his father. He got his name “Oliver Twist” when he enters the city's almshouse.

When all the boys who at the almshouse raffle about who’s going to ask the leaders about more food, Oliver takes the shortest cord. Next day when everyone have eaten they’re food, Oliver walks to the leaders and asks for more food. Oliver immediately gets into jail.
Some people decides to make Oliver to a disciple and send him to man who works as a funeral director, and he starts to work and help him. Oliver like the people, except another disciple. The boys gets mad at each other, and the other disciple is calling Oliver’s mum mean things. Oliver gets really mad at the boy. He attacks him and beat him in his face.

Oliver decides to run away. He packs all his stuff and starts to London during the night. It’s a very long way to go, but he’ve decided to go all this way.
After some days, when Oliver is in London, he’s totally exhausted. A boy called ‘Dodger’ (his real name is Jack) who’s just a few years older than himself is a pickpocket, sees Oliver sitting on a step. He asks Oliver if he want a place to sleep at over the night. Oliver says yes, and from that moment his life in London won’t be the same. Dodger promises Oliver that he’ll get a new home at Mr. Fagin’s place. At first, Oliver likes to live with Fagin and the other boys are good, but not for long.

When Oliver one day innocently accuses for pilfering a man called Mr. Brownlow helps him free.  Mr. Brownlow take Oliver with him home to his big and nice house, and he lets Oliver live there. Oliver feels better than ever and he’s very happy, but everything changes when he gets kidnapped by Mr. Sikes, one of Fagin's ‘friends’. Mr. Sikes quickly decides that he wants Oliver to help him to make bruglary Mr. Brownlow’s house.

He takes Oliver with him, Oliver knows the way to the house, and how it looks inside. When Mr. Brownlow and his wife hears that someone’s in their house, Mr. Sikes starts to shoot with his pistol. Mr. Brownlow starts to shoot with his rifle, and in the middle of the fight, Oliver gets hit. He gets weak, and doesn’t feel very well.
Everyone flee from the house and run away. A girl called Nancy, who’s friend with both Fagin and Sikes, wants to help Oliver, and takes contact with Mr. Brownlow.
One night they meet up on a bridge, and Nancy tells Mr. Brownlow about everything that happened to Oliver, and that he feels good. Also, she tells him that he have to tell the police about Fagin, and that he has Oliver.

Dodger followed Nancy to the bridge, and he tells Mr. Sikes everything about Nancy’s speech with Mr. Brownlow. Mr. Sikes walks straight home to his place, and there he kills Nancy. Now when Mr. Sikes and Fagin knows that the police search for them they flee.

The people and police find Mr. Sikes they want to shoot him, and also save Oliver. He take Oliver with him up to the roof. With the crowd and the police down on the yard looking after them with ther hearts in their throats. They continue to climb an they’re coming to a ledge where the police starts to shoot, and Mr. Brownlow force his way to the front to tell them to stop. They can hit Oliver, and that’s not what he wants to. Mr. Sikes take a rope and make a loop of it. He takes it around his body and take Oliver in his hands and swing over to the other side. He lefts Oliver on the other side, and when he’s about to take the rope of his body, he sees his dog on the other side. The dog starts to bark, and Mr. Sikes gets so schoked that he falls with the rope around his neck. He hangs himlsef.

Now Oliver lives a good life in Mr. Brownlows house, and he’ll do it a long time in the future too.
